MATRIARCHS

Opening this month on the 13th is the exhibit titled Matriarchs at the El Segundo Museum of Art. Three of my prints are on display plus my woodblock that I carved onto cherry wood for the print Corazon de la Tierra (Heart of the Earth) You can also check out my serigraphs Corazon del Agua and Balam Huipil Remix. It is such an honor to be a part of this Indigenous Women's exhibit curated by Kristen Dorsey (Chickasaw Nation) and Jaclyn Roessel (Diné).

This year the matriarch of my family, my grandmother, passed away and I was her primary caretaker for the past 2 years. To be a part of this exhibit was a beautiful offering to her and her legacy. In this exhibit I am showing my serigraph Corazon del Agua (Heart of water) which I created while she was very ill and not doing well. This piece is about life, how water is honored, cared for and how women have carried on these traditions. My grandmother was Lenca from El Salvador and a warrior who was resilient and determined to survive as a young widow. She was my sheroe and my best friend. She taught me a lot about plants, natural medicine and how to take pride in our traditions.
